Boost your immune system with beet and onion syrups.
Autumn is the time when our bodies become more susceptible to infections and colds. The long, cold days, lack of sunlight, and heating all contribute to a decrease in immunity. During this time, our immunity is put to the test. The immune system in young children is not fully developed yet, which is why children catch almost every infection. Returning to preschool also promotes the spread of pathogens and increases illness rates among both children and adults. We prefer to avoid antibiotics, although in some cases, they are irreplaceable and life-saving.
In today’s post, I wanted to focus more on syrups made from natural ingredients that can be easily prepared at home. They help in the fight against infection, mainly in cases of cough and hoarseness, and speed up the recovery process.
The first syrup that came to my rescue was made by my mother-in-law when my two-year-old son had a persistent cough. The syrup not only alleviated the symptoms but also accelerated the recovery process. I’m referring to beet syrup, which is very easy to prepare.
The second syrup is based on onions and garlic, to which I added ginger and lemon. Thanks to a high dose of active compounds and vitamins, it boosts immunity and is a top choice among homemade antibiotics in the fight against infection.
The third syrup is a combination of onions, garlic, and thyme. With this combination, no cough stands a chance:)
You can add white or brown sugar to the syrups, or honey, which also has antibacterial properties.

Beet syrup. How to make it?
To prepare this syrup, you only need a medium-sized beet and honey or sugar.
Start by washing the beet thoroughly under running water using a brush. Then, cut off the top of the beet and create a hole in it. It’s important not to pierce all the way through, as that would cause all the juice to come out. Put a spoonful of honey or a spoonful of sugar into the hole and cover it with the previously cut-off top. Place the beet in the oven at 200 degrees Celsius without convection for about 20 minutes. Syrup will accumulate in the hole, which you can use right away.
Important!! The beet syrup should be used on the same day; otherwise, you should store the beet with the syrup in the fridge and consume it at the latest the next day.
Onion, Garlic, Ginger, and Lemon Syrup. How to Make It?
To prepare this syrup, you’ll need a large onion, four garlic cloves, a 3 cm piece of ginger, juice from one lemon, and 5 tablespoons of sugar or honey.
Dice the onion, press or finely chop the garlic, and slice the ginger thinly. Put everything in a 0.5-liter jar, sprinkle with sugar or pour honey over it, add lemon juice, mix, and gently press it all down with a spoon at the end. Seal the jar and set it aside in a dark place overnight. After this time, the syrup is ready for use, and you don’t need to strain it.

Onion, Garlic, and Thyme Syrup. How to Make It?
As before, we will use a large onion and 4 cloves of garlic. Additionally, we need three sprigs of fresh thyme or 1 tablespoon of dried thyme.
Prepare the onion and garlic as before. Finely chop the thyme, and place everything in a 0.5-liter jar. Sprinkle with 5 tablespoons of sugar or honey, mix, press it down, and seal the jar. Set it aside in a dark place overnight. In the morning, the syrup is ready for use, and you don’t need to strain it.
