My custom protective net – An effective barrier against birds
In today’s post, I would like to share with you my personal experience and an effective solution I applied to deal with persistent birds. Birds were always the first in line to taste the fruits on my bushes. I rarely managed to gather all the ripe fruits. Finally, I decided to use an effective protection in the form of a net. I would like to share with you how this solution worked for me.
Required materials and tools.
Simply draping the net over the bush is not always sufficient. Birds can easily pick the fruits that are adjacent to the net.
My garden bed measures 2m x 1m. The blueberry bushes are about 80cm tall. Therefore, I decided to build a frame and move the net away from the bushes so that none of the flying visitors in my garden could reach the fruits.
To build the frame, I used 20mm diameter PEX pipes and 25mm diameter blue PE pipes.
For cutting and drilling, I used pipe cutters, a 20mm step drill bit, and a cordless drill.

From the PEX pipes, I made two arches with a width of 130cm and a height of 150cm, as well as two half-arches with a width of 40cm and a height of 150cm.
From the blue pipe, I made a crossbar that connects all four elements.

At a distance of about 15cm from the ends of the pipes, I drilled two holes with a diameter of 20mm.

The PEX pipe fits snugly into the PE pipe and the drilled holes.

To secure the net, I needed a lot of clips. I cut the remaining PE pipe into pieces about 3cm long. From each piece, I cut out 1/4 of the wall. In total, I made 20 clips.

I assembled the frame next to the garden bed, checked if everything fit properly and if the spacing was maintained. I placed the net over the frame and secured it with the clips. Finally, with the help of my husband, we placed the assembled frame with the net onto the garden bed.

Once everything was in place, I stretched the net and secured it further with additional clips.

I anchored the net to the ground using staples for agricultural fabric.

In total, I used about 10 meters of PEX pipe and 1.5 meters of PE pipe.

Inspired by our shared passion for gardening, we can create a space where we not only achieve bountiful harvests but also unleash our creativity and imagination. My protective net is proof that even simple solutions can have a significant impact. Therefore, I encourage you to pursue your own ideas and create something that is not only functional but also unique and inspiring to others.
